Hi [name], my name is [name] and I live in District [number]. I am calling to urge you to vote no on the draft Invitation to Bid (ITB) for gas and electric franchises that will be presented at the City Council meeting on August 6th.
I am in favor of municipalizing San Diego’s gas and electric infrastructure for a few reasons:
- First, San Diegans would pay less for energy with a public utility. We currently pay some of the highest rates for electricity in the nation and the state, and that burden falls hardest on our working class families.
- Second, public ownership means San Diego keeps all the money that would otherwise go to an investor-owned utility and its shareholders. As has been made especially clear by the COVID-19 crisis, we can’t afford to give this money away.
- Third, public ownership means faster adoption of renewable energy. The people of San Diego care about climate change and want to do their part to transition to renewables, but SDG&E has fought rooftop solar and the creation of CCAs because they cut into shareholder profits. A public utility would give us control over our energy future.
Public services should be operated for the public benefit, not for profit. Please vote no on the ITB parameters and support public power.
