Migrant Rights

San Diego’s Migrant Communities

San Diego County is home to a diverse immigrant population. Immigrants enrich our communities with their traditions, culture, and languages. Immigrants account for approximately 23% of our county’s population. Around 156,000 of San Diego’s immigrants are undocumented. As we prepare for the next four years of Trump’s authoritarian, anti-immigrant administration, we know that San Diego County will be heavily targeted. We will not sit back and let our friends, neighbors, and coworkers be attacked. We are organizing, fighting back, and building support for San Diego’s migrant communities. We demand an end to deportations. We believe in workers uniting across borders and we advocate for the freedom of movement for all peoples. San Diego DSA is working alongside local progressive leaders, movements, migrant communities, and organizations to defend migrant’s rights in our community. Keeping ICE Out of Our Schools

ICE and other immigration enforcement agencies are a threat to our students and teachers. Children of all ethnicities and backgrounds have a right to safety and education. The San Diego Unified School District affirmed this principle by taking concrete steps to protect students and faculty from immigration enforcement on school property. Shamefully, the board members of the nearby Grossmont Union High School District have failed to enact policy preventing immigration enforcement from conducting raids on our schools. We demand that the Grossmont Unified High School District adopt San Diego Unified School District’s “Welcoming Resolution” and create a visible virtual presence affirming the policies in the resolution, similar to SDUSD’s pro-immigrant student landing page and media engagement (IGlocal news). We will not stop until our school boards affirm that no student is illegal, and that all children have the right to a violence-free education. Join the San Diego DSA and make your voice heard.

Recalling Phil Ortiz

Phil Ortiz is endangering our migrant community. He has cosponsored a resolution directing the El Cajon police department to collaborate with ICE. This is an unambiguous betrayal. Phil Ortiz is unfit to represent the people of El Cajon. The San Diego DSA is leading the charge to recall Phil Ortiz. If you would like to join our canvassing efforts to recall Phil Ortiz, RSVP here.
