Electoral and Healthcare Working Groups
December 12 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The joint meeting of the electoral working group and health care working group will occur on Wednesday December 12, 2018 at 7pm.
The January transfer of control in the House of Representatives makes it possible to wage a serious struggle for Medicare for All at the national level. The Conyers M4A bill, HR676 now has 123 cosponsors, even while the Democrats are still the minority party in the House. With enough grass roots pressure from DSA and other progressive organizations, we can hope that the newly arrived younger progressive members of Congress will make their voices heard load enough to move legislation forward.
Unfortunately, the mildly optimistic outlook expressed above does not apply to San Diego County. The County has three Democrats in the House, with a fourth, newly elected Mike Levin, on the way. One of them, Scott Peters, sits on the Energy and Commerce Committee, which would hold hearings on HR676 if it moves forward. In fact, if one wanted to argue that relying on elected Democrats to accomplish anything useful is a wasted effort, one would simply point to the San Diego Congressional delegation to make the case.
The above means that DSA has to be part of a movement that creates such strong public support for M4A that even our centrist elected officials can’t withstand the pressure. That is the goal of the national DSA effort, but the task is more difficult here in San Diego County. We have great allies: National Nurses United, Our Revolution, Bernie Sanders and others.
At our December meeting, we will discuss steps that DSA can take to advance the cause of M4A. In preparation for the meeting, you may want to hear the recording of the Nov. 13 conference call between the major advocates, including the Nurses, Bernie Sanders and DSA’s Maria Svart. The link to the recording is: https://soundcloud.com/national-nurses-united/medicare-for-all-national-strategy-call . Well worth listening.
Hope to see you Dec. 12th.
